About

My name is Juana Alejandra Cousins, and I write this project under the editorial and professional name Alejandra Lexel.

The Lexel Journal is an independent space for exploring language, art, identity and cultural interpretation through essays, observations and interdisciplinary reflection.

I am an educator, interpreter and cultural observer interested in the ways people communicate, construct identity and navigate different systems of meaning.

For nearly fifteen years, I worked in higher education, helping students develop language, communication and critical thinking skills. Along the way, I became increasingly fascinated by a broader question:

How do people learn to understand worlds that initially feel unfamiliar?

That question continues to guide my work today.

My interests span language education, interpretation and translation, art and museum experiences, cultural communication, image and personal presence. While these fields may appear unrelated at first glance, I see them as different expressions of the same human activity: interpretation.

Whether we are learning a language, standing before a painting, choosing what to wear, entering a new culture or communicating across differences, we are constantly interpreting signs, symbols, contexts and meanings.

The Lexel Journal was created as a space to explore these questions publicly.

Here I share observations and reflections on language, art, identity, culture and the many ways people seek connection, understanding and belonging.

My goal is not simply to provide answers, but to cultivate curiosity, observation and deeper ways of seeing.

A Personal Note

I believe that learning, communication and transformation begin with attention and focus

The more carefully we learn to observe, the more clearly we learn to understand ourselves, others and the worlds we inhabit.
